Conductive Yarn

Conductive Yarn (80% Polyester & 20% Stainless Steel) by Schoeller.

2/50 Nm, 50g cone = 1250 metres.

Conductive yarn made up of short Steel fibres mixed with Polyester.

Long staple textile fibres are combined with stainless steel fibres, these fibres are considerably thinner than a human hair and have a constant electrostatic and/or electromagnetic protective effect on the textiles.

Can be used to make stretch and pressure sensors, anti-static clothing, radiation-protective clothing, data transmission (intelligent clothing), also heatable clothing.

Note: Conductive yarn is different to conductive thread, it's high resistance makes it inadequate to directly connect components unless they are very close together or the knitted yarn is stretched.

Its high resistance makes it great for stretch and pressure sensing. As a knitted sample held loosely, it has a high resistance as the steel fibres in the yarn are in little contact with each other but when the sample is stretched, the steel fibres are pulled into closer contact, reducing the resistance and allowing the flow of an electric current.

Helpful Hints:

Can be added into knitwear to create effects. Can also be dyed.
